One of the highlights of the NRF Foundation Student Program in NYC is the retailer-led Tours & Talks. Students like you have the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look, hear from our leaders, and take away advice and insights to carry through the rest of the weekend and beyond. Here’s some suggestions on how to prepare and elevate your experiences and make the most of your Tour & Talk..
Before signing up for a particular Tour & Talk be sure to research the retailers you are interested in or looking to join for a Tour & Talk. Familiarize yourself with their hiring opportunities, Intern or Full Time and research the specific Tour & Talk Sessions, Speakers and Topics to ensure they align with your interest and potential career aspirations. Potentially be so bold to connect with Early Career teams/ listed attendees prior to further jumpstart your networking and stand out in the crowd!
Only sign up for a Tour you know you’ll be interested in and committed to attend. These are limited and highly coveted spaces. Retail partners spend a lot of time planning and preparing to make these sessions as engaging and impactful for you as students. Remember you are representing your University and NRF chapter as well as beginning to build a network of retail professionals – Your network and relationships matter, so make a great first impression!

A Tour & Talk is such an exciting experience for both you as a student and us as retailers to get to know you. Be on time, be professional, and network. Talk to your peers who are there with you, talk to the retail leaders you meet, and have questions prepared ahead of time. It’s not every day you get to take a tour of these behind-the-scenes spaces and this is your opportunity to stand out.
As the Tour & Talk comes to an end, be sure to thank the hosts for their time, and ask them about any possible internships they have coming up. Leave a business card or a resume if you bring one, connect on LinkedIn. Finally, don’t forget to send a thank you note to those that hosted you and take capture of your tour and tag @NRFFoundaiton for a chance to have yours featured!
