Costco Wholesale Chief Technology Officer Torsten Lubach

Costco Wholesale Chief Technology Officer Torsten Lubach is a global industry leader and one of the NRF Foundation’s 5 honorees recognized on the list of People Shaping Retail’s Future 2025. He has built a career based on his values and carries those through in his advice and how he conducts himself daily.  

We had a chance to ask Lubach 20 questions about his career, the retail industry, and advice he would give to those looking to grow their careers in retail. Here are a few of his responses.  

What career advice would you give to your younger self? 

Don't try to figure it out all on yourself. There are others that know more than you. Don't be afraid to ask and don't be afraid to say when you don't know. 

What do you do to stand out? 

I don't think standing out is important. It's important to get the work done that needs to be done, and that will get you recognized. 

Tell us about a great manager you had and how they impacted your career. 

Probably one of my first, who told me how important it is to take responsibility and be accountable and be brave enough to say when you're wrong. 

What innovations are you most proud of? 

Anything that makes our member's shopping experience better, from ordering online to delivery in the warehouse or home. Anything that speeds up the process of getting in and out. Anything that makes shopping at Costco more fun. 

What is one misconception about retail that you would love to debunk for everyone? 

That retail is just the store. It's everything. Most of it you don't see. And it's like an iceberg, most of it is hidden from your sight.
