With roles in distribution centers in increasingly high demand, the NRF Foundation is offering a credential within its RISE Up suite of training courses to prepare people quickly and effectively for these roles.
According to the National Retail Federation, the number of warehouse and distribution center jobs grew 56 percent in the last five years, and Tractor Supply Company is among the retailers expanding their network of distribution centers.
In the video below, Tractor Supply Company Supply Chain Recruiting Manager Alex Fleming shares more information about the career paths in warehouses and distribution centers – the key links that get product to retailers and consumers nationwide.
Here are a few of the questions, along with Fleming’s answers:
What roles are available?
Here at Tractor Supply Company, we have eight distribution centers throughout the United States. These distribution centers work to provide support to our over 1,900 retail locations, as well as our innovative and growing ecommerce platform.
Making up the largest population within our distribution network are the DC [distribution center] team members. These roles are dedicated to receiving, storing and shipping the products that our customers in stores want and need.
What are the requirements of the job?
To work in a Tractor Supply distribution center, you must be at least 18 years of age. Each of our distribution centers operate on a 24/7 basis with four shifts, offering daytime and evening hours.
You may be required to lift between 50 and 75 pounds, and you must be capable of standing, bending, squatting and/or walking for extended periods of time. All offers of employment are contingent upon the favorable results of a background screen.
What types of promotions can come from the entry-level jobs?
Tractor Supply Company is committed to growth and development. Our team members have a great opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment where they can broaden their skillsets and advance their careers. We’ve seen our team members promote into some pretty incredible roles.
From a DC team member, one great advancement opportunity is through our SIT – or supervisor in training – program. This structured program gives our team members a chance to learn what it is like to lead and develop in a Tractor Supply Company distribution center. The program allows the participant the chance to work on a continuous improvement project and eventually present out their findings from the program to the supply chain leadership team.
