When Juan Pinillos arrived in the United States from Colombia more than 20 years ago, he was looking for opportunity. He didn't have retail experience. He didn't know exactly what the future would hold for him or his family. What he did know was that if someone gave him a chance, he would work hard to make the most of it.

That opportunity came from Walmart.

Today, after 23 years with the company, Juan leads a Walmart store in Miami and has spent more than a decade as a store leader. In that time, he helped develop future leaders, strengthen local businesses and create opportunities for countless associates and customers. "I don't see Walmart as a place to work," he said. "I see Walmart as a place where my family and I built a future."

Turning a Job into a Career

Juan began his journey at Walmart as an overnight stocker. While the position provided stability for his family, he was convinced to stay by the company's investment in its people. As he took on new responsibilities and embraced new challenges, leaders around him recognized his potential and encouraged him to grow. Juan took on each new opportunity he was given. “I was never scared to jump into different tasks or difficult challenges," he said. "That helped me grow in the company."

He continued to advance through multiple roles before becoming a store manager 11 years ago. Since then, he has led stores across South Florida, helping thousands of associates and serving communities through periods of growth, change and challenge. "I had no experience in retail," he said. "I came to a big company, worked hard and was given opportunities to grow."

Connecting to Community

Speaking with his customers every day led to one of Juan’s proudest accomplishments.  While leading a newly opened store during the pandemic, he spent time talking with shoppers about what products they wanted but couldn't find. Customers shared the same feedback: they were looking for foods and products that reflected their cultures and traditions, especially in a largely Hispanic community. Rather than accept the limitations of the existing assortment, Juan went to work.

He connected local suppliers with Walmart buyers and helped create a pathway for small businesses to bring products into stores. The initiative introduced culturally relevant items from communities across South Florida, including products popular among Colombian, Venezuelan, Mexican, Salvadoran and other Hispanic households.

The impact went beyond the customer experience. As more products were added to stores, local businesses gained access to new growth opportunities and expanded production to meet demand. "I was the bridge between the suppliers and the buyers," he said. "Not only did we bring items customers wanted, but we provided opportunities for small businesses in the community." What began as a local effort eventually influenced merchandise programs in other markets, creating benefits for customers and suppliers alike.

A Leader Who Serves Others

Ask Juan about leadership, and he immediately shifts the focus away from himself. For him, leadership isn't about titles, recognition or individual accomplishment. It's about helping other people succeed. "Leadership is not the person who becomes successful," he said. "Leadership is helping others grow."

Throughout his career, he has worked to identify potential in people that they often don't see in themselves. He empowers associates to make decisions, encourages them to pursue new opportunities and helps remove the obstacles standing between them and their goals. He views his role less as directing the work and more as supporting the people doing it. "Associates need to know it's their store, not my store," he said.

That philosophy has helped him develop numerous future leaders, many of whom have gone on to become coaches, salaried managers and store leaders themselves. One story stands out.

Juan recalls mentoring an associate who had spent nearly two decades with the company but didn't believe he was capable of running a store. He encouraged him to take the leap. Today, that associate is thriving in leadership. "He told me, 'I just needed someone to push me to the limit and help me believe I could do it,'" Juan Pinillos said. Those moments, more than any award or recognition, are what fuel him to keep going.

Building Futures, Not Just Careers

While Juan has earned not able recognition during his career, including being named Store Manager of the Year and participating in companywide leadership events, he views those accomplishments as reflections of the teams around him rather than individual achievements. Instead, he finds the greatest reward in seeing associates build successful careers and stable lives.

When he returns to former stores, associates often share updates about buying a home, supporting their families, earning promotions or achieving goals they once thought were out of reach. "That's my best pay," he said. For someone who came to the United States searching for opportunity, helping others find their own path has become the most meaningful part of the job.

The Power of Retail

After more than two decades at Walmart, Juan remains passionate about retail's ability to improve lives. He has witnessed how stores create jobs, support schools, partner with food banks and strengthen local economies. He has seen firsthand how a retailer can become an anchor for a community and a launchpad for careers.

For Juan, retail has always been about opportunity. Walmart gave him the chance to build a future for his family. Today, he is paying that opportunity forward by helping others discover what is possible for themselves.
