From Scholarship to Showroom: How Emily Found Her Future in Retail

September 17, 2025

Emily Arreola’s journey into the retail industry began with a spark, and a scholarship. As a Fashion Merchandising major with an emphasis in Brand Management at the University of Georgia, Emily had always been captivated by the psychology behind consumer behavior and the dynamic nature of retail. But it was her scholarship to attend the NRF Foundation Student Program that truly opened her eyes to the breadth of opportunity within the industry.

“The Student Program gave me a deeper understanding of what retail really is,” Emily says. “It’s not just about selling products—it’s about building communities, creating jobs, and making a meaningful impact.”

Encouraged by a classmate who served as an NRF Ambassador, Emily applied for the Bright Futures scholarship and was selected to attend in 2023. The experience was transformative. Surrounded by industry leaders and fellow students passionate about retail, she gained the confidence to pursue her ambitions and the clarity to see where she could thrive.

Receiving the Bright Futures Scholarship and attending the Student Program was the turning point. It gave me the confidence, the connections, and the drive to pursue a career I love.

Just months after graduating, Emily landed her first full-time role as Assistant Buyer I at Ross Dress for Less—a company whose values aligned with her own. “Ross is committed to delivering value without compromising quality,” she says. “That mission resonates with me, and I’m excited to contribute to it.”

At Ross, Emily is now shadowing seasoned buyers and building on the foundation she laid during college. She was drawn to the company not only for its reputation but for its clear path for growth and development. “There’s a strong culture of learning here,” she notes. “I’m constantly encouraged to expand my knowledge of the market and think critically about how I can make a difference.”

Emily’s story is a testament to the power of opportunity and the importance of programs like the NRF Foundation Student Program. “Receiving the Bright Futures Scholarship and attending the Student Program was the turning point,” she reflects. “It gave me the confidence, the connections, and the drive to pursue a career I love.”
