From Student to Intern: Zoe Mullins’ Journey Through the NRF Foundation

When Zoe Mullins first joined the NRF student chapter at the University of South Carolina, she never imagined how deeply her involvement with the NRF Foundation would shape her college experience—and her career. Now a senior studying Retail with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising, Zoe has gone from student participant to intern, building a career rooted in connection, mentorship, and opportunity.

A Foundation Built on Opportunity

Zoe’s introduction to the NRF Foundation began in her freshman year, when her Introduction to Retailing course swapped a traditional textbook for the RISE Up Retail Industry Fundamentals course. That early exposure gave her practical skills and a deeper understanding of the retail landscape.

“It was a much more meaningful use of my time and money,” Zoe recalls. “I took away important skills that anyone entering the field should know.”

Her goal to attend the NRF Foundation Student Program in New York City became a reality in her junior year, thanks to a scholarship from the University of South Carolina. Her experience was transformative.

“The Student Program gave me confidence in my future career and allowed me to learn from brilliant industry leaders in real time,” she says. “I remember writing down their advice as fast as possible so I could take it back to school with me.”

Connecting Talent Through Talent Management

During her Summer 2025 internship at DICK’S Sporting Goods, Zoe saw firsthand how the NRF Foundation connects talent across the industry. A presentation by Foundation team members, Annalea and Adam, sparked interest among her fellow interns, and Zoe was able to share her own experiences and encourage others to get involved.

“Through that call, I connected with Annalea and Adam about my application for the Foundation internships,” Zoe says. “I feel very grateful to be working for a company that has given me so many opportunities and resources during my time in college.”

I continue to be involved with the NRF Foundation because I never want to stop learning and evolving.

Interning with the NRF Foundation in Corporate Engagement, Zoe is on the other side of the Student Program, helping plan and supporting the next generation of retail leaders. She tells us, “I continue to be involved with the NRF Foundation because I never want to stop learning and evolving.”

“This internship has already taught me so much about philanthropic work, event planning, and fostering new connections,” she says. “I’m beyond excited to support the Student Program this year.”
